Bookkeeper

Women Make Movies is looking for an experienced, efficient and responsible Bookkeeper. Women Make Movies, a non-profit media organization based in NY, is the leading distributor of films by and about women in North America.  Founded in 1972, WMM is a pioneering, feminist, social enterprise with a 90% earned income revenue stream.  Our Production Assistance Program assists women directors with their productions from concept through completion with fiscal sponsorship, consultations and other technical assistance.

Responsibilities and tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Completes all bookkeeping functions including, but not limited to: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and benefits processing, bank and investment reconciliations, and general journal entries
  • Works with Operations Manager and outside CPA on annual audit
  • Knowledge and execution of general accounting and tax operations (1099s, etc.)
  • Prepares and presents financial information and grant reports
  • Organizes and maintains up-to-date files and back-ups for all transactions
  • Other general bookkeeping functions including entering transactions and reconciling with program databases
  • Manages overdue invoices; collections from customers

Skills, Qualifications and Other Requirements:

  • Must have working experience with, and strong knowledge of, QuickBooks and Excel
  • Experience with Salesforce a plus
  • 3-5 years previous full charge bookkeeping experience necessary
  • Excellent attention to detail and significant data entry ability
  • Must possess a positive attitude, be flexible with regard to tasks and responsibilities, and remain calm under pressure
  • Minimum two year college degree (bonus if you have accounting/bookkeeping coursework)
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations

Women Make Movies is committed to distributing independent films by women directors and assisting them in getting their movies made.  Now's your chance to help - and to work with both film and feminism.

Apply today for an internship with Women Make Movies. Since 1972, we have worked to facilitate the production, promotion and distribution of films by women directors and producers. Learn all about working in film and for a women's non-profit organization!

Our films include Emmy, Peabody, and Sundance Award Winners and Academy Award Nominees, as well as broadcasts on HBO, PBS, Showtime, and the Sundance Channel.

Internships are available in the following departments:

Qualifications & Time Commitment

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills; strong organizational skills; the ability to multi-task, work independently and work well under pressure; and will take initiative. Familiarity with Internet research, Windows XP and the Microsoft Office Suite necessary. Knowledge of and interest in feminist media a plus.

Interns are asked to work a minimum of 15 hours per week during the school year and 24 hours per week in the summer. Duration is flexible to meet university requirements, but a minimum commitment of three months is optimal. All interns will be required to sign an Internship Letter of Agreement that outlines the duration and schedule of their internship.
