Kathleen Shannon: On Film, Feminism & Other Dreams
A film by Gerry Rogers
Canada, 1997, 50 minutes, Color, VHS/16mm
Order No. W99602
This inspiring portrait depicts the life of film pioneer Kathleen Shannon, the founder of Studio D at the National Film Board of Canada. Founded to fund and produce films by women filmmakers, Studio D trained and nurtured women filmmakers and showcased women’s perspectives on all social issues for more than 22 years. In interviews and archival footage, this fond memoir details how in her dozen years as studio head Shannon oversaw production of more than a hundred films, including Academy Award winners I'LL FIND A WAY and IF YOU LOVE THIS PLANET and groundbreaking titles NOT A LOVE STORY and FORBIDDEN LOVE. This intimate journey into the life of an exceptional woman offers a unique perspective on the history of feminist filmmaking.
QUOTES

“The enormous diversity, energy, and impact of the films we made at Sudio D are all rooted in the radical vision of Kathleen Shannon. She gave a voice and a vision to several generations of Canadian filmmaking women. All Canada is in her debt.”
