The Secrets of Successful Proposals
Wednesday, October 21 6:30 - 8:30PM

$50 (reg. rate)   |   $40 (discount rate

WMM's Fall Workshop Series kicks off with The Secrets of Successful Proposals. As film funding becomes increasingly scarce and competition grows equally fierce, how will you make your proposal and film stand out in the crowd?

Join us for an essential evening of grant-writing how-to’s. Topics will include identifying a proposal’s 13 elements, writing an effective synopsis, approaching the best funders, and avoiding common mistakes. Successful proposals will be passed out and discussed. Don’t miss this opportunity to improve your skills and take the intimidation out of grant writing! Presented by Michelle Materre, fundraising and grant writing consultant.

Meet the Gucci Tribeca Fund and Tribeca All Access
Wednesday, October 28 6:30 - 8:00PM

$20 (reg. rate)    |    $15 (discount rate

Two Tribeca Film Institute programs will co-host a session at WMM to discuss their current open submissions. Ryan Harrington will talk about the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund, which was established to provide finishing funds to feature-length documentaries that highlight and humanize issues of social importance. Grants in 2010 will range from $10,000 to $25,000.

Tamir Muhammad of the Tribeca All Access (TAA) program will discuss how it supports directors and screenwriters from traditionally underrepresented communities, including women, in the film industry. TAA serves as a year round networking and career development forum that provides access to industry representatives looking for new projects in development. Join us and learn more about these incredible programs! Reception to follow event.

Meet the Funder: Incite Productions
Wednesday, November 4 7:00 - 8:30PM

$15 (reg. rate)    |    $12 (discount rate

Join us as we welcome Daniel J. Chalfen of Incite Productions, a non-profit organization that finances, develops, produces and markets high-quality documentaries (and occasionally narratives) that focus on global social, political and human rights issues.

Incite utilizes film as a medium for activism and to create awareness of subjects of contemporary importance. They become involved with films that have a strong potential for advocacy, outreach and commercial success. Come with questions and learn about this largely unknown resource for independent filmmakers! A reception will follow the event.

From Festivals to Cinemas to Broadcast to Digital: Surveying Your Distribution Options

Wednesday, December 2 6:30 - 8:30PM

$50 (reg. rate)    |   $40 (discount rate

Knowing your options for distribution and establishing a clear set of goals for your film—as early as the pre-production phase—are essential for your film’s success. This workshop presents how to explore the different markets (i.e. theatrical, educational, broadcast, home video, public screenings, digital/download) and determine the right fit.

Topics include: developing the public image of your film; navigating the film festival circuit; pitching to buyers; negotiating contracts; and making decisions in a digital age. An essential workshop for any filmmaker who wants their work to be seen! Presented by WMM's Executive Director, Debra Zimmerman.

Everyone Wins: Developing an Engagement and Audience Building Campaign While You Produce Your Film
Monday, December 7 6:30 - 8:30PM

$50 (reg. rate)    |    $40 (discount rate

Filmmakers no longer have the luxury to focus exclusively on making their docs. Today funders want to know that films will have impact and move people to action. Increasingly, you need to think strategically about the audience you want to reach and how to connect with community partners (non-profits, NGO’s, educators), while also keeping your production on track. This workshop provides essential information about what today's funders want when it comes to an "audience engagement" plan for your film.

We will cover: how to extend the life of your film while maximizing its reach and visibility; how to develop relationships with key allies; how to use web 2.0 social networking and online tools to foster viewer feed-back and interaction between communities; and how to create support materials such as screening guides and screening-in-a-box toolkits.

Presented by Shaady Salehi, Program Director of Active Voice, a communications strategy company that harnesses the power of film, television and multimedia to spark social change, and Tracie Holder, filmmaker, fundraiser and consultant to WMM.
