Hair Piece A Film for Nappy-Headed People
A film by
Ayoka Chenzira
Grades 6 and up
This spirited animated short examines how African-American women and girls respond to Western standards of beauty through their hairstyles. Lively tunes and witty narration accompany a quick paced inventory of relaxers, gels and curlers, as Black women endure arduous salon rituals that promise silken hair and lush locks. Essential for introducing issues of body image to younger students, "Hair Piece" teaches girls of all backgrounds to accept and celebrate their natural beauty.
