Girls Like Us
A film by Jane C. Wagner and Tina DiFeliciantonio

Grades 6 and up

A classic documentary on young women from the WMM collection, "Girls Like Us" introduces an ethnically diverse group of four working class girls in South Philadelphia. Filmed over the course of four years, this mesmerizing documentary reveals the impact that class, sexism, and violence has had on the dreams and expectations of young women. As they grow up before the camera, difficult moral dilemmas emerge – such as early pregnancy and safe sex – which they are forced to negotiate alone. This powerful documentary provides an opening for parents, counselors and educators to discuss the challenging topics of sex, peer pressure and choice with teenagers. In documenting their friendships, challenges and triumphs, "Girls Like Us" presents a searingly honest, inspiring depiction of girls' lives that is ideal for promoting dialogue between adults and young women alike.

“Surprising, heartbreaking and leaves one pondering the mysteries of life and fate…will have a real impact on an audience of teenage girls. Highly recommended.”
Jan Albert
Lower Eastside Girls Club

”Girls Like Us follows four girls through the ages of 14 to 18, a candid and unflinching examination of their relationships with family and friends, sexuality, and their voyage through adolescence to the verge of adulthood. These are urban working class girls with some tough growing up to do, dealing with issues like strict family expectations, pregnancy, violence, broken homes, boyfriends and getting through high school. It is fascinating and surprising to watch how these girls end up at the end of their amazing journeys.”
Kathleen Knisely
Belmont Day School

“The film provides the opportunity to discuss the faith these girls have in individual solutions to the structural social problems that affect their lives, an issue Women’s Studies faculty run up against with students every day.”
Feminist Collections

“…Extremely powerful…unique in its depth, honesty, and seamless integration of education and audience social awareness.”
Charlene Clemens
