Grrlyshow
A videotape by
Kara Herold
Grades 9 and up
Chronicling the pop culture phenomenon of “grrly zines” – self-published magazines written mainly by teenage girls and young women – "Grrlyshow" demonstrates how alternative forms of print media have allowed girls to humorously and critically explore issues affecting their day-to-day lives. English teachers and after-school programs will find "Grrlyshow" a useful tool for encouraging young women to consider journalism as a potential career. Refreshing and entertaining, this engaging piece shows that young women have the power to change and reinvent their image in the mainstream media.

“Great fun, wonderfully irreverent and super hip…a fantastic introduction to the world of ‘zines. I’d like to use the film with our teen editors so that they can see what it looks like when women take charge of a medium and determine for themselves what images and information about women they want to disseminate to the world.”
Kelly Knopf-Goldner
