Uphill All the Way
A film by
Khin May Lwin and
Robert Nassau
Grades 9 and up
Uphill All the Way is the astounding true story of five troubled teenage girls from a rehabilitative high school for at-risk-youth who face the challenge of their lives: a 2,500-mile bicycle journey along the U.S. Continental Divide. Despite the emotional risks posed by their unstable backgrounds, they sign up for the bike trip to prove individually and collectively that they can reach once unfathomable heights. Critical viewing for counselors and educators working with at-risk youth, Uphill All the Way provokes an honest discussion on overcoming personal struggles and difficult group dynamics. Teens will find a realistic model for improving self-esteem, confronting challenges head on and the possibilities of achievement through perseverance. “For any teacher who has used ‘hands on’ or ‘experiential education,’ this film will validate efforts that can seem, at times, to be daunting. The story of these girls, their efforts to complete the challenge, their support to each other through emotional as well as physical crises (as well as their brutal honesty) is both captivating and compelling.” Susan Mondzak, New York City Board of Education.

"…an inspiring story about girls' resiliency and the power of supportive relationships between and among girls and women. Given high expectations, tremendous physical and emotional challenges, and the unwavering love and support of committed adults willing to take risks, girls - especially "troubled" girls who barely believe in themselves - can accomplish amazing things. A heartwarming film."

“***1/2… Lively discussions and interactions provide welcome insight into the minds of these troubled teens who learn that the ability to persevere despite great emotional and physical adversity is invaluable in boosting one’s self-esteem. Well edited, thought-provoking and – believe it or not – bristling with suspense, this is a highly recommended.”
