Closer
Directed by
Tina Gharavi
Grades 11 and up
A poignant character study of Annelise Rogers, a 17-year-old lesbian who dreams of leaving her working-class English town for the freedoms of London. "Closer" provides a rare portrait of a self-assured young woman coming to terms with her sexual identity and changing family dynamic. While addressing a difficult topic, educators and community youth groups will find "Closer" a useful starting point for discussions on teen sexuality, mother-daughter relationships and young people’s struggle for independence.

“Offers images of understanding in a warm and accessible manner…compelling.”

“One of the most refreshing elements of Closer is the considerable amount of time devoted to Annelise reflecting on her dreams and aspirations. So many films about queer young people focus more on obstacles to achievement - risk factors, harassment, discrimination - than they do on the strength, self-determination and uniqueness of their subjects.”
