LONGINOTTO'S SISTERS IN LAW PREMIERES AT DIRECTORS' FORTNIGHT

SISTERS IN LAW, recently acquired by WMM, and the latest from internationally acclaimed director Kim Longinotto, will premiere in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes, the only documentary to be chosen in this category. Longinotto is one of the preeminent documentary filmmakers working today, renowned for creating extraordinary human portraits and tackling controversial topics with sensitivity and compassion. Longinotto's film THE DAY I WILL NEVER FORGET premiered domestically at Sundance in 2003.

SISTERS IN LAW, called a "moving and powerful work of humanism...[and] a wonderful and strong piece of cinema" by Olivier Père of Directors' Fortnight, follows the work of two female government officials in Kumba, Cameroon as they help women in their community fight against abuse in their personal lives. Both disturbing and hopeful, this extraordinary piece captures the courage of these women and the possibility of change.

WMM is pleased to distribute ten of Longinotto's films, including DIVORCE IRANIAN STYLE, DREAM GIRLS and SHINJUKU BOYS. For more information on her films, visit www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/makers/fm44.shtml.

NEW RELEASE AL'LEESSI FEATURED IN SEMBENE'S LECON DU CINEMA

WMM New Release AL'LEESSI. . . AN AFRICAN ACTRESS by Rahmatou Keita will screen as part of a lecture and presentation by legendary director Ousmane Sembene. Praised for her "unobtrusive camera" by Robert Koehler of Variety, the director chronicles the rise and fall of Zalika Souley, once the legendary bad girl of African cinema, and now living in poverty in the capital of Niger. More than just a testament to one woman's life, this fascinating film is also a treasure of archival images which reveal the little known story of the birth of African cinema in 1960’s Niger, when a cottage industry of Westerns, detective films and thrillers delighted audiences.

Screening times:
Sunday May 15, 21:00 in the Salle Bunuel as part of La Lecon de Cinema: Ousmane Sembene, "Hommage a la Film Foundation."

WMM FILMMAKER COLBURN'S SHORT TO SCREEN AT DIRECTORS' FORTNIGHT

WMM filmmaker Martha Colburn's recent short COSMETIC EMERGENCY has been selected for Directors' Fortnight.  WMM distributes
THE FILMS OF MARTHA COLBURN (1995-1999), a collection of experimental shorts. Her new film explores the idea of beauty obsession through a collage of found footage, documentary and lyrical paint-on-glass animations. The director will be in attendance.

Screening times:
Thu May 19, 14:00, Théâtre Noga Croisette
Fri May 20, 19:30, Studio 13
