New Perspectives on the Israel/Palestine Conflict

At a time when the violence between Israel and Palestine is escalating, three new films from WMM raise vital questions: How do people on both sides of the conflict cope while living in the middle of a war-torn zone? How can they avoid being consumed by hate and anger? How do they end the brutal cycle of victim and victimizer?

For those seeking to more deeply understand the continuing struggle, these important films address issues that are at the heart of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, lending insight into the everyday life, struggles, and decisions made by women who live in the region. By grappling with these tough issues, viewers gain new and valuable perspectives on the ongoing conflict.

SORAIDAMeeting Soraïda will overturn any preconceived notions viewers may have about Palestine. Documenting the often-ordinary daily life of Soraïda in her neighborhood in Ramallah, Soraïda, Woman of Palestine illustrates how—despite the burden of curfews, checkpoints, and violence—the people in her neighborhood are determined not to lose their humanity. Directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Tahani Rached (FOUR WOMEN OF EGYPT) for the National Film Board of Canada.

MY LAND ZIONIn the provocative personal essay My Land Zion, sixth generation Israeli Yulie Cohen Gerstel grapples with the "official" history of her country and the reality she sees around her. Gerstel questions her parents about the role they played in the pre-state Palmah militia, talks with a Holocaust survivor living in a house on Arab displaced land, and documents her own concern about her daughter's mandatory military service. Compelling and courageous, this is an example of personal documentary at its best.

Women in StruggleA fascinating portrait of Women in Struggle, this powerful film presents the personal perspectives of four female Palestinian ex-detainees. Through the women’s discussions about their motivations for becoming active in the fight for Palestinian independence, this film goes to the heart of the questions many Americans are asking themselves: what makes a person turn to violence? What are the conditions that lead ordinary women to engage in armed resistance?
