WMM New Release|
The Phantom of the Operator

“An enormously imaginative docu… an
hour of non-stop visual and intellectual stimulation.”

Variety

WMM release THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERATOR, by Quebecoise filmmaker Caroline Martel continues to thrill audiences with recent screenings at Pacific Film Archive and the Chicago International Film Festival. Hailed by the Village Voice as "the series' highlight [of MoMA's Canadian Front program]" and an "intelligent and dedicated work", this unique montage film reveals a little-known history of female telephone operators. More than just "voices with a smile", they held a central place in the development of 20th-century global communications.

A treasure for archivists, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERATOR, which had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, is crafted from more than 150 rarely seen industrial films produced in North America by Bell Labs. Screened at some of the most prestigious film festivals and exhibition venues in the world, the film provides a wry yet ethereal portrait of human society in the technocratic age.
