WMM Celebrates
Indie Queen
Ulrike Ottinger

Sumptuous,
transgressive, outrageous… hailed as queer epics and fantastical
feminist allegories, the work of Ulrike Ottinger is like no
other. Exploring Berlin's many subcultures and diverse
populations, Ottinger's signature use of visual effects delves
into the unusual aspects of contemporary culture. Her films have
been screened around the world to critical acclaim, placing her
among a handful of women directors in Europe to have achieved
international stature.
"Ottinger works the margins
which put her on the cutting edge. The multiculturalism of
her films is the kind that shoots up every identity, sexual
or otherwise, with a megadose of difference. There is no
other filmmaker." -Artforum

Johanna d'Arc of Mongolia, Madame X: An Absolute Ruler and Ticket of No Return
Johanna d'Arc of Mongolia
Seven western women travelers meet aboard
the sumptuous Trans-Siberian Express. Lady Windemere (Delphine
Seyrig)
regales a young companion with Mongol myths and lore
while other passengers revel in campy dining car cabaret
until they're suddenly abducted by a band of Mongol horsewomen.

Madame X: An Absolute Ruler
In this
extravagantly aestheticized, postmodern pirate film,
Madame X — the cruel, uncrowned ruler of the China seas
— promises "gold, love, and adventure" to all women
who'll leave their humdrum lives behind.
More.
Countdown
Shot over the ten-day period leading to the union of
Germany's two currencies on July 1, 1990, the film’s ten
episodes record the people and streets of East and West
Berlin, visiting landmarks and monuments as well as
pockets of Berlin ignored by other cameras: workers,
immigrants and East German gays demonstrating for the
first time.

Ticket of No
Return
Visit the hyperstylized world of 70's and
80's Berlin with an icon of German post-modern
cinema. Tabea Blumenschein plays a
glamorous drunkard who embarks on a sightseeing
tour of Berlin's nightlife with a bag lady named
Lutze. With appearances by Nina Hagen, Magdalena
Montezuma, and Eddie Constantine.

The Image of Dorian Gray in the Yellow Press
In this
ingenious reworking of the Dorian Gray story,
Ottinger tells the tale of
the chief executive of a multinational media
organization with an unscrupulous plan—"We will
create personalities, sensations, scandals and
catastrophes of our own!" Dorian Gray (played in
drag by 60's supermodel Veruschka von Lehndorff)—young,
rich, handsome and narcissistic—is the tool: 'We
will build him up, seduce him and destroy him!'
