Women Make Movies is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of three filmmakers connected to our community who were recognized by Creative Capital this year.
Two WMM filmmakers received the inaugural Creative Capital State of the Art Prize. Brydie O’Connor, selected for the state of New York, is the director of LOVE, BARBARA, distributed by WMM, and BARBARA FOREVER, which was produced with support from the WMM Production Assistance Program. BARBARA FOREVER recently premiered at Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award: U.S. Documentary.
Gabriella Garcia Pardo, selected for the state of Florida, is the director of FENCED, also supported by the WMM Production Assistance Program. FENCED was awarded the Ji.hlava New Visions Forum Award for Most Promising U.S. Project after pitching at the forum last year.
Additionally, WMM program alum Cheryl Dunye received a 2026 Creative Capital Award. Dunye is the director of The Watermelon Woman, which is listed in the National Film Registry and remains a landmark work in American independent cinema.
