ESTHER NEWTON MADE ME GAY SCREENING AT FIREHOUSE CINEMA SEPTEMBER 6TH AND 7TH

We are delighted to announce that our friends at DCTV will be hosting two NYC public screenings of WMM new release ESTHER NEWTON MADE ME GAY (Dir. Jean Carlomusto) at Firehouse Cinema on Wednesday, September 6th, and Thursday, September 7th at 7 pm EST. After the showing on September 6th, there will be a special Q&A with the Esther Newton herself, director Jean Carlomusto, producer Shanti Avirgan, and moderated by WMM Executive Director Debra Zimmerman.

The film tells cultural anthropologist Esther Newton’s story of awakening to gay life in the 1950’s, the women’s liberation movement and lesbian-feminism, drag culture, and forging a butch identity that for her is in conversation with trans-masculinity.  Esther was a pioneer throughout her career – questioning and challenging status quo assumptions on gender, sexuality, and anthropological methods. Her work inspired generations of scholars to pursue research in what would eventually become the field of LGBTQ & Gender Studies.
