In the wake of the recent horrific events in Atlanta and other cities, we have been reflecting on the rise in anti-Asian sentiment and hate crimes against Asian-American communities. Women Make Movies has co-signed a collective community statement of solidarity with Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta chapter against misogyny, systemic violence, and white supremacy.

In an effort to create greater awareness and center and uplift the voices of Asian and Asian-American women, we made available select films throughout May 2021 in celebration of Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. While the AAPI virtual screenings have ended, the the panel discussion we hosted on April 22 continues to be available to watch. Stay tuned for other future virtual screenings.

Stories of Asian and Asian-American Women Panel

On Thursday, April 22, Women Make Movies and Asian Women United hosted a panel discussion about media representation of Asian and Asian-American women and how independent film can help shift the narrative. With the surge of hate crimes against Asian-American communities and rise in anti-Asian racism in the U.S., this conversation couldn’t have been more timely.
