The New York Latino Film Festival is underway, continuing through September 21. WMM forthcoming release UVALDE MOM (dir. Anayansi Prado), also made with the support of our Production Assistance Program, will have its New York premiere! And two other powerful films made with the assistance of WMM’s Production Assistance Program will have their world premieres: I AM MY GRANDMA’S GRANDDAUGHTER / NIETA DE MI ABUELA, directed by Tatiana Fernández Geara, and LIBERTAD, directed by Brenda Ávila-Hanna.
UVALDE MOM (dir. Anayansi Prado)
This gripping feature documentary, which had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this year, follows Angeli Rose Gomez, the farm worker and single mother who made national headlines when she ran into Robb Elementary during the May 2022 shooting to rescue her sons. The film spotlights her bravery while exposing systemic failures and the personal costs of demanding accountability.
I AM MY GRANDMA’S GRANDDAUGHTER / NIETA DE MI ABUELA (dir. Tatiana Fernández Geara)
In response to her grandmother’s plea, “Don’t end up alone like I did,” filmmaker Tatiana Fernández Geara explores her grandmother Teresa’s remarkable life as a fiercely independent Dominican woman who defied convention, and in doing so, questions her own ideas about solitude, love, and legacy.
LIBERTAD (dir. Brenda Ávila-Hanna)
Filmed over seven years and interwoven with animation based on the subject’s own art, this intimate documentary follows Alejandra, an Indigenous transgender woman who fled Mexico after a near-fatal assault. Now a healthcare provider in California, she faces the wrenching decision to seek asylum in order to see her ailing mother again.
If you’re in NYC, be sure to check out these remarkable films!
