WMM Production Assistance Program Filmmakers Win Sundance Documentary Fund Grants

We’re excited to celebrate several WMM filmmakers from Women Make Movies’ Production Assistance Program who have been recognized as part of the Sundance Institute’s 2026 Documentary Fund grantees!

Two projects made with support from WMM’s Production Assistance Program received grants:

  • GOD OF THE IN-BETWEEN (dir. Archana Phadke; prod. Aman Mann and Shaunak Sen).

For generations, a community on a remote island has relied on the seaweed that surrounds them. Panchavarnam and her “seaweed sisters” have spent their lives gathering this precious resource, but as her daughter dreams of a different life, Panchavarnam finds herself fighting to keep their sisterhood and traditions alive.

Struggling filmmaker Shaina Feinberg travels to Maine to meet Joan Darling, a trailblazing director and teacher. What begins as an attempt to tell Joan’s story slowly becomes something more personal, a portrait of two artists at different stages of their lives and a beautiful, messy reflection on what it means to keep creating until the very end.

Additionally, WAHNISH KEEPS ME FREE, produced by Resita Heavenly Cox, and PENNY & KOKO, produced by Chai Vasarhelyi, are also grant recipients. Cox is the director and protagonist of BASKETBALL HEAVEN, currently being made with the support of our Production Assistance Program, and Vasarhelyi is a program alum.

And a shout-out to former staff member, current mentor and consultant, and long-time friend of WMM, Lucila Moctezuma, who is the producer of ANATOMY OF INDIFFERENCE, which is also a grantee.

Congratulations to all the filmmakers and team recognized by the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund.
