Women Make Movies Supports Reproductive Rights

Women Make Movies has joined Peace Is Loud, Women and Hollywood, Oscilloscope Laboratories, Abigail Disney, rePRO, The Future of Film is Female, and others in the film industry in voicing our support for reproductive rights. We have signed Peace is Loud’s open letter in support of abortion access. Individuals and organizations are welcome to join us in signing here

Through both our Production Assistance and Distribution programs, we have a long-standing commitment to supporting women filmmakers who champion feminist perspectives, document issues of abortion access, address unjust laws, advocate for women’s bodily autonomy, and expose how women of color and poor women are disproportionately affected by restrictive legislation.

In the past year, we have added four new releases to our reproductive rights collection: ABORTION HELPLINE (dir. Barbara Attie & Janet Goldwater); BELLY OF THE BEAST (dir. Erika Cohn); FLY SO FAR (dir. Celina Escher); and the forthcoming AMERICA’S WAR ON ABORTION (dir. Deeyah Khan). As long as women’s bodies and rights are in jeopardy, we will amplify these stories and maximize their impact.

The Supreme Court began hearing a Mississippi abortion case challenging Roe v. Wade, the decision legalizing abortion nationwide, on December 1, 2021. Read more about the case in Ms. Magazine here and listen to the arguments here.
