Cecilia Cornejo
Cecilia Cornejo was born and raised in Chile and came to the U.S. in 1994. She became interested in video making while attending the University of Iowa, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies. She went on to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Video at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she taught in the Film and Video department until becoming the Assistant Director of Academic Advising. Cornejo's work lies at the intersection where public and private worlds meet. Through the use of written and visual poetry combined with documentary techniques, Cornejo creates works of non-fiction that bring a personal dimension to the documentary tradition. Aside from her artistic practice, Cecilia is the co-founder of The Nineteenth Step, a collective of artists, teachers, and curators who use cinema as a tool to foster a deeper understanding of Latin American culture.
