We’re excited to share that WMM release RAZING LIBERTY SQUARE, directed by Katja Esson and broadcast on PBS’s Independent Lens, has been nominated for a 2025 News & Documentary Emmy®.
Esson, whose films we’ve been distributing for over 20 years, brings a powerful lens to the story of Liberty Square, the first segregated public housing project in the American South. As Miami’s waterfront real estate is increasingly threatened by rising seas, developers have turned their attention to inland communities like Liberty Square—built 12 feet above sea level—displacing longtime Black residents in the name of “revitalization.”
RAZING LIBERTY SQUARE exposes the devastating realities of climate gentrification and the systems that perpetuate racial and economic injustice. Through intimate, character-driven storytelling, the film centers the voices of those fighting to remain in the neighborhoods they call home.
Congratulations to Katja Esson and the entire team on this well-deserved nomination.
