We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of trailblazing filmmaker, artist, and longtime Women Make Movies filmmaker Joan Braderman.
Joan was a visionary in the world of experimental and feminist cinema, whose work redefined the possibilities of video art and storytelling. From her groundbreaking film JOAN DOES DYNASTY to her celebrated feature THE HERETICS, Joan’s voice was fearless, funny, and radically original. She carved space for women, queer people, and independent media makers with a singular mix of political insight and visual invention. As a founding member of the feminist art collective Heresies and a passionate educator Joan influenced generations of media activists and artists. Her commitment to challenging power structures on screen and behind the camera was unwavering.
We are proud to have supported and distributed Joan’s work over the years and honored to have known such a brilliant and uncompromising creative force of a woman.
Our hearts are with her loved ones, her students, and the entire community of artists who were lucky enough to work with her and be inspired by her.
