“Make Art, Make Trouble: Feminist Art, Film and Collective Action” – A Tribute to Joan Braderman

As we approach one year since the passing of longtime WMM filmmaker Joan Braderman – an artist, storyteller, performer, and educator who was a visionary for feminist cinema and younger generations of filmmakers – we invite you to an event honoring her legacy. 
 
The day-long event – Make Art, Make Trouble: Feminist Art, Film, and Collective Action – will take place June 25, 2026 from 12:00-9:00pm at SVA theatre in New York. The first part of the day, organized by Joan Braderman Archive and Abina Manning (Executive Director of Video Data Bank from 2006-2021), brings together works by Braderman and her contemporaries through a screening program of early feminist film and video accompanied by artist Q&As. Two of Joan’s early films – JOAN DOES DYNASTY and THIRTY SECOND SPOT RECONSIDERED — will play in the afternoon alongside films and videos by Max AlmyLyn BlumenthalAyoka Chenzira, Julie DashZeinabu irene DavisSu FriedrichMona HatoumMeena NanjiCyrille Phipps, and Martha Rosler. Su, Martha, Meena and Cyrille in attendance to participate in a short Q&A.  
 
At 5 PM, there will be a screening of THE HERETICS, introduced by B. Ruby Rich and Becky Donovan, and followed by a panel discussion including Heresies members Su Friedrich, Elizabeth Hess, and Joyce Kozloff, moderated by scholar Tatjana Schaefer. A catered reception will follow.  
 
All videos and films will be Closed Captioned, and live ASL interpretation will be available.
