Gurinder Chadha
Gurinder Chadha began her career as a BBC news reporter and went on to direct award-winning documentaries for the BFI, BBC and Channel Four. Her debut feature, BHAJI ON THE BEACH won the jury prize at the Locarno International Film Festival, received a BAFTA Nomination for Best British Film and won the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Newcomer to British Cinema. Her second feature--What's Cooking?--was the opening night film of the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, was voted joint audience award-winner in the New York Film Critics' 2000 season, and won her Best British Director at the London Film Critics' Circle Awards.
Chadha directed the world wide hit Bend it Like Beckham, which garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture (Musical and Comedy), a BAFTA nomination for Best British Film, a European Film Academy nomination for Best Film, and a Writers Guild of America nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The film went on to the top box-office charts in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and South Africa. Bend it Like Beckhamalso won the audience favorite film awards at the Locarno, Sydney and Toronto film festivals.
Chadha followed with cross-over hit, Bride and Prejudice (2005), and has several new productions in the works. (6/07)
