5 WMM Films and Filmmakers Nominated for Film Independent Spirit Awards

The 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations have been announced, and five WMM films and filmmakers are on the list. Notably, three of the five films nominated for Best Documentary are by WMM filmmakers or Program alum: MIDWIVES (dir. Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing), which was made with the support of the Production Assistance program; ALL THE BEAUTY AND BLOODSHED (dir. Laura Poitras, Program alum); and RIOTSVILLE, USA (Prod. Sarah Archambault, Program alum).  

Two of the three filmmakers nominated for the Truer Than Fiction Award, presented to “an emerging director of non-fiction features who has not yet received significant recognition,” are WMM filmmakers or program alum: Rebeca Huntt, director of the WMM-sponsored film BEBA, and Program alum Reid Davenport (dir. I DIDN’T SEE YOU THERE). The 2022 Truer Than Fiction Award winner was Jessica Beshir, director of WMM-sponsored film FAYA DAYI.
