SUGARCANE Nominated for Peabody Award

The Peabody Awards just announced its nominees in documentary, news, public service, and radio podcast categories for its 85th competition. We are happy to announce that out of over 1,000 submissions, SUGARCANE (dir. Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat), made with the support of WMM’s Production Assistance Program, is one of the nominees!

SUGARCANE uses powerful storytelling to expose the horrors of Canada’s Indian residential school system. It’s an unflinching yet intimate movie that celebrates and gives voice to Indigenous communities.

Also, a shoutout to WMM Board Member and Program Alum Lisa Cortes whose film  THE SPACE RACE (dir. Lisa Cortes and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza) which sheds light on Black NASA astronauts who fought through systematic racism to demand their place in the space program, is also nominated.

As Jeffery Jones, executive director of Peabody said, “This year’s nominees explore the local and global, the forgotten and the widely celebrated.”

Winners will be announced on May 1st and the awards ceremony will be held on June 1st at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
