Women Make Movies Filmmakers and Program Alum Nominated for the 95th Academy Awards

The 95th Academy Award nominations have been announced and we are excited that 3 WMM filmmakers and program alum have been nominated, making this the 17th year in a row that a WMM film and/or filmmaker has been nominated for an Oscar!

Best Documentary Short Nominee

  • THE MARTHA MITCHELL EFFECT (dir. Anne Alvergue and co dir. Debra McClutchy; prod. Beth Levison and Judith Mizrachy), made with the support of the WMM Production Assistance program, tells the story of one woman who spoke inconvenient truths and was summarily dismissed. However, it is also a larger tale of the impact of political dirty tricks on American society.

Best Documentary Feature Nominees

  • ALL THE BEAUTY AND ALL THE BLOODSHED, directed by Production Assistance Alum Laura Poitras, follows the life of artist Nan Goldin and the downfall of the Sackler family, the pharmaceutical dynasty who was greatly responsible for the opioid epidemic’s unfathomable death toll; and
  • FIRE OF LOVE, directed by Production Assistance Alum Sara Dosa, unravels the mysteries of volcanoes by capturing the most explosive imagery ever recorded – the death of intrepid scientists and lovers Katia and Maurice Krafft in a volcanic explosion.

A well-deserved congratulations are in order for all our filmmakers, films and program alums! The 95th Academy Awards airs Sunday, March 12, 2023. Read the full list of nominees.
